There are some books that arrive at exactly the right time, and The Midnight Carousel was one of those for me. I wanted something light, romantic and Christmassy because, really, who doesn't love a Christmas story?
I have read several of Hanna Park's books before, and this one has a much more tender romance than I am used to from her. Belle and Hudson's story is gentle and unhurried, and I really enjoyed watching two people who are clearly drawn to each other take a ridiculously long time to do anything about it.
There is always magic of some sort in Hanna's books, so I knew it was coming and I was waiting for it. Then it arrived and I thought, well, this is new! I certainly wasn't expecting the story to take the magical direction it did, and I loved the originality of the idea.
I also enjoyed the sense of community. Forest Falls is full of people who know one another, interfere when they feel like it and seem remarkably interested in Belle's love life. It gave the book a warm, friendly feel that suited the Christmas setting perfectly.
This may be a gentler Hanna Park novel than the ones I have read before, but her wonderful imagination is still there. Christmas, a tender romance and a completely unexpected kind of magic — what's not to love?
